When you look at this cat, what is the first thing you see? Fluff, a very fluffy kitty. Where do you think this cat lives? Where it is hot or cold? Why?

The adaptation of many different types of BIG CATS

So how do different cats adapt? What does adapt mean anyway?

Adapt means to change in order of your surroundings. Here is an example:

Lets say you and your family are going on a trip to snowy Colorado! But, since you live at the beach, you are not used to the differences in weather. So, instead of bringing your swimsuit you need to bring your thick jacket, hat, and gloves in order to ADAPT to Colorado's weather.

That is just one of the many ways people and animals can adapt. But, adaptation doesn't always involve weather. It can involve how the human or animal moves or  walks, or how it eats, etc. But, how do cats adapt? Lets find out!

Some important adaptations of cats include retractable claws, (close to) perfect eyesight, and agility, or meaning, the power of moving quickly and easily.

Most cats have retractable claws. They extend their claws only when needed for capturing prey or for traction when running or climbing. When claws are not needed, the cats keep them hidden away, sharp and ready for use. Cheetahs are unable to retract their claws, and experts believe this is an adaptation to fast running.

Vision is cats' best developed sense, this is where the saying, "Do you have cat eyes?" comes from. Cats also have extremely flexible spines, enabling them to use more muscles when running and achieve faster speeds than other mammals. Since they use more muscles when running, cats burn more energy and therefore cannot maintain speed for extended periods of time without experiencing fatigue(a cause of weariness).

TIMELINE

1960_______1981_____1990_________2000+________

1960-the Ragdoll Breed began in California,  with kittens from a white, long-haired mother cat and a Birman, or part-Birman father ( a birman is a sweet affectionate, semi-long haired cat) .

1981- the breed had become popular in England as well as North America

1990-cat breeders started using ragdolls to mix three similar types of cats- ragmuffins, honeybears, and cherubims

2000+- ever since the early 1960s Ragdoll cats have been the sweetest mix that was ever breeded in America

Here is a question to think about:

If Ragdoll cats are a mixed breed, then why are they so expensive?

Is it because of fur, their personality? What do you think? WEll, go develop your own opinion by finding out yourself!
